The Quartz Hill Reserve Charitable Trust objects

Prime object of the Trust

To protect and maintain the natural amenity, open space, and the landscape including the peneplain remnant and natural and rural and coastal character of Quartz Hill in perpetuity, for the enjoyment of the public.
Recognising that Quartz Hill has values of coastal natural character, geopreservation values, recreational and ecological values, open space values, historical values, spiritual values and spectacular landscape values, the prime object of The Trust is as follows:

(a) To protect and maintain the natural amenity, open space, and the landscape including the peneplain remnant and natural and rural and coastal character of Quartz Hill in perpetuity, for the enjoyment of the public.

Further objects of the Trust are as follows:

(a) To purchase Quartz Hill from Meridian Energy Limited by raising funds by public subscription, and by other means.

(b) To protect the native flora and fauna on Quartz Hill and its flanks, particularly the 135 hectare Department of Conservation - Makara Covenant R27106, the Makara Walkway R27099, Makara Coast Marginal Strip R27065 and Makara Coast Recreational Reserve R27063, and the bush area known as "Johnny's Bush".

(c) Because a commercial wind power station is incompatible with the values of the land that the Trust seeks to protect, commercial power production by wind turbine generators, and any other development that is similarly incompatible, shall be prohibited on Quartz Hill.

(d) To maintain the open pastoral landscape by continuing to lease Makara Farm as a working pastoral farm where and when this is possible.

(e) To allow free access to the public to Quartz Hill for recreation such as walking, horse riding, running, and mountain biking, along dedicated routes, subject to any reasonable restrictions where Quartz Hill is actively farmed, and to enable fishing on the coast.

(f) To maintain and enhance the places of historic interest on Quartz Hill (the Gun Emplacements, Pa Sites, Telecom Village and the old Makara Radio and Receiving Stations).

(g) To observe the Department of Conservation Makara Covenant.

(h) To maintain or enhance Telecom Village to support the property and provide an income to the Trust for the purposes of maintenance and enhancement of Quartz Hill.

(i) To promote public education, knowledge and appreciation of the natural heritage of the Wellington region, including the natural features and values, history, and cultural values associated with Quartz Hill.

(j) To seek and foster community support for the objects of The Trust, and community participation in the achievement of those objects.

(k) To work with other agencies such as Wellington City Council, Greater Wellington-The Regional Council, and the Department of Conservation, to achieve the objects of the Trust.
