Our Vision is based on our Trust Objects:
The Reserve provides a freely accessible open space pastoral and coastal landscape for
quiet spiritual enjoyment.
The Reserve is appreciated for educating about natural heritage and pastoral farming.
People are actively using the Reserve for walking, running, cycling,
horse riding and fishing along dedicated routes at appropriate times.
The Makara Walkway extends south to allow public access to Te Ikaamaru Bay.
The biodiversity values of the remnant native forest, shrubland, coastal escarpment
and the backdrop of Makara Beach, are protected and regenerating to native forest.
The Quartz Hill peneplain geopreservation feature is legally protected,
grazed and restored for all to see.
The historic Fort Opau gun emplacements, the former Makara Radio buildings,
and archaeological sites, are protected and interpreted as examples of our cultural history.
Specialised appropriate community uses such as Amateur Radio and Orienteering are thriving.
The Trust is financially self-supporting in its work with the income from the Makara Farm
and the former Makara Radio buildings.
The Trust is actively supported by the community, tourism, Councils, and Government Departments.
