You can visit Quartz Hill - Makara Farm in many ways:
1. The coastal Marginal Strip with its walking path, track and route
2. The Conservation Covenant coast and gun emplacements access
3. The Makara Walkway
4. The remainder of Quartz Hill - Makara Farm
The main access is from Makara Beach which can be reached by car or cycle,
but there is no public transport. Makara Beach has a carpark, public toilets,
and a cafe that may be open, particularly at the weekend.
Other access is from the end of Opau Road, and from Makara Road just north of Makara village.
1. The coastal Marginal Strip with its walking path, track and route
From Makara Beach, a 20 metre wide Marginal Strip exists for public access. You can walk around
the coast to Opau Bay and beyond, picnicking or fishing or swimming on the way.
Initially there is a good path until Wharehou Bay, then a track
to Opau Bay, followed by a route south along the coast.
2. The Conservation Covenant coast and and gun emplacements access
This covenant provides for general public access to the coast and the Fort Opau gun emplacements.
Any fenced off covenant immediately behind the coastal Marginal Strip is generally open for access
to the coast, and the historic Fort Opau gun emplacements .
3. The Makara Walkway
This Walkway leaves the coastal Marginal Strip at Wharehou Bay and heads across the covenant
up the hill past the old maori pa site and up to the historic Fort Opau gun emplacements.
From there it heads inland crossing farmland that may be closed due to lambing,
and down the sealed road to Opau Bay, where it meets the coastal Marginal Strip.
4. The remainder of Quartz Hill - Makara Farm
The remainder of Quartz Hill - Makara Farm is accessible to genuine walkers,
provided the approval of the farm manager is obtained. You can then walk the hills,
visit the various native bush areas on the property, see the historic Quartz Hill Radio Station buildings,
and walk over the Quartz Hill peneplain.
You can also continue on to Te Ikaamaru Bay and Terawhiti Station with approval of their farm manager,
ultimately reaching Owhiro Bay via the South Coast after a very long walk.
